The Human Tissue Authority (HTA) has revised its guidance for professionals working with women who have experienced pregnancy loss or termination. This update sets out the minimum standards expected from service providers responsible for the disposal of pregnancy remains, emphasising the importance of involving women in decision-making about sensitive handling procedures.
The revision follows an independent review on pregnancy loss commissioned by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and published in July 2023. The review examined NHS gynaecology and maternity care practices for women experiencing pregnancy loss or termination.
A consultation to update the guidance was led by DHSC's Maternity and Neonatal Unit, involving a broad range of stakeholders. The revised guidance aims to ensure compassionate and respectful care for women during these sensitive circumstances.
