Public Display stakeholder forum

Submitted by Hannah Smith on

A year on from the very first Public Display sector forum, we welcomed back representatives from the sector and along with some new faces who joined us for the first time. We had a helpful discussion on some current and potential changes that will impact people working in our licensed establishments.

New approaches to Public Display regulation: Evaluated Self-Assessment

We’re modernising our regulatory approach for public display establishments based on the potential risk with the introduction of more proportionate Evaluated Self-Assessments (ESAs). ESAs have been successfully implemented in the research sector and offer a more streamlined way for licensed establishments to demonstrate compliance with our standards.

The new process involves a straightforward questionnaire where Designated Individuals will self-assess against the 36 standards outlined in our Code of Practice D. For each standard, you'll simply indicate whether your establishment is compliant or non-compliant, with space to explain any issues.

To ensure you receive personalised support, each establishment will be matched with a dedicated Regulation Manager who will be available for discussions and site visits when needed.

Although at an early stage feedback has been positive so far. We hear from stakeholders that it it’s "Quite a good way to focus the mind, not too arduous" and "A valuable opportunity for advice and guidance from the HTA."

We also reassured sector colleagues that in-person inspections will remain an important part of our regulatory approach.

Policy developments in the repatriation of human remains

Repatriation of human remains has been debated by politicians and made media headlines around the world recently.

We had a useful and interesting discussion on this topic and recognised that there is no simple answer to the difficult issues around storage, display and potential return of human remains. We’re committed to working with Designated Individuals in Public Display establishments on any potential legislative changes.

We thanked everyone for their time and the insight and feedback that was shared. We’ll continue to monitor progress on ESAs and any developments in the repatriation of human remains that might impact the sector.
